The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem Volleyball, is Kayleigh Carpenter.  Kayleigh, a junior, is an outside hitter for the 17-6 Saxons.  In the 3-0 win over Mountain View Kayleigh had 13 kills and 10 digs.  She followed that up with 13 kills, 13 digs, and a solo block in the 3-1 victory over Summit.  In the 3-2 win at Sprague, she had 15 kills, 15 digs, and 5 aces.  Coach Matt Leichty added, “Kayleigh has been one of our leaders both offensively and defensively all season, and has played very well the past several weeks, helping us to conference wins over Mountain View, Summit, and Sprague. She also played a key role in our 6-0 record in pool play in the Clearwater Classic in Bend and helping us advance to the gold bracket where we lost a close match to #1 ranked West Linn and again this past weekend helping us stay undefeated in pool play and make it into the final 4 in the West Linn Tournament with a win over Oregon City and another tough loss to West Linn.” Congratulations Kayleigh from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Sprague Volleyball, is Megan Smith.  Megan, a junior, is a setter for the 9-14 Olys.  In the 2-3 loss to South Salem, Megan had 10 kills, hitting at .281 with 30 assists and 14 digs.  In the Mountain View match she recorded 29 assists, 13 digs, and 4 kills.  In the 3-2 win over West Salem, Megan had 2 aces, 3 kills, 3 blocks, 17 digs, and 45 assists.  Coach Anne Olsen added the following about Megan: “She is running a 5-1 most matches.  She has great hustle and determination.  When she is on the court, you can feel the energy shift.  She definitely is getting better at being the quarterback of the court and knowing how to be an aggressive setter.”  Congratulations Megan from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McKay Boys Cross Country, is Dillon Newswanger.  Dillon is a freshman runner for the Scots.  Dillon began the season running times roughly close to his Special Olympics 5k PRs (personal records) of around 33 minutes.  Every week Dillon has shown vast improvement in his times. Coming into the Lewis and Clark XC Invite, Dillon’s PR had dropped to 30:02. At the Lewis and Clark XC Invite, which did not feature a ton of PRs, Dillon PRed by over a minute finishing at 28:50. Coach Arch Zellick commented, “As Dillon will not be able to travel with us to our MVC Conference Championship, this was his final meet of the year. He stepped up in the way that we hope all of our athletes do when the season comes to an end and ran a huge PR.”  Coach explained, “Dillon is a member of McKay’s DLC program, and Dillon has autism.” Talking about his freshman runner, Zellick added, “He is dedicated to the program and to his own development. We have seen him grow as a runner and as a member of the team, becoming more and more comfortable in social settings with the other athletes and taking coaching instructions. We are happy and proud to have Dillon as a member of our cross-country community and look forward to more years of his dedication to and love of the sport.”  Congratulations Dillon from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Sprague Football, is Drew Rodriguez.  Drew, a junior, is a wide receiver and a defensive back for the 5-2 Olys.  In the 52-28 win over Churchill Drew had 8 receptions for 135 yards and 2 touchdowns.  He also had a run for 37 yards and a TD.  Coach Jay Minyard added, “Drew is a junior but has started on the varsity squad since he was a frosh.  Drew has been a great leader and has been a playmaker on both sides of the ball for us all year.  He had a punt return for a TD against McNary and has also returned 2 interceptions for TD’s from his free safety position.  Drew has a very high ceiling and has the potential to be playing at a high level on Saturdays if he continues to work hard.” Congratulations Drew from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!
