NEWBERG, Ore– It was a matter of digging deep in the mid-day heat at Jaquith Park Sunday afternoon for the Dallas Lady Dragons 14U going up against the Blaze.

It was the end of their third week of games and the defense just ended the Blaze threat, which scored two runs to close out the fourth inning in the 8-2 Dragons win in the Newberg Father’s Day Tournament 14B Green Bracket Championship game, when the travel softball twist occurred in which the home team gets a second life for a rally.

But the squad in front of them were ready to do it once more no matter the situation at hand. The bats were coming around, having producing their second big inning on Sunday with their five-run fourth inning to push their lead to 8-0 entering the bottom half of the inning.

Aggression on the basepaths had set them up for success for when the opportunities arise. Kaelyn Golden, Jordan Cresswell and Jessie Plummer each stole two bases as the Dragons as they built the cushion for their pitcher in Kadance Morrison.

“It was hard because we were tired and it was hot out,” said Morrison. “This weekend we haven’t been hitting a lot, we’ve been having trouble with the bats so it was good to see them and getting our hitting back.”

Her defense backed her in allowing four hits all game. Morrison had a one-hitter entering the fourth inning to go with six strikeouts in the win. The defense in total allowed four runs in bracket play, allowing two runs against MVP in the 1pm game leading into their 3pm Championship game in the sun.

“We did way better than we had,” said Plummer, who made a clutch out in the outfield in the fourth inning. “We came back and did really good. This is our third weekend playing and we did way better than we have been, like turned a switch on us and we’ll probably do way better from now that we’ve learned more on defense.”

Morrison had picked up strikeout number five to start the inning, and after giving up a single and a walk the Dragon defense turned the put-out at first and Morrison picked up a game-ending strikeout to seal the 8-2 victory to close out the tournament.

Golden went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the Championship Game and Cresswell drove in 2RBIs herself in the final game of the weekend.

12U- The Lady Dragons 12U squad defeated the Tigers Rage 10-0 to open the Green Bracket 12B/C/10A play before holding off the Canby Rebels 12U late rally for the 7-5 victory. Madi R drove in 2RBI’s on 1-for-2 hitting while striking out six in five innings of pitching.

18U– After dropping their opening game to the Oregon Titans in a close 6-4 bout, the Dragons edge the Frost Elite 9-8 to finish third in the Silver Bracket of the 18U/16A tournament.
