SALEM, Ore.–When the game tipped off, the South Salem Saxons Boys Basketball seemed off.
Not sure if it was it was fatigue from the night before versus McKay, North Salem coming out firing or whatever it might’ve been; but there was a sense of weary from South during the first half of the game.
“I think we came out nonchalant, we didn’t come out ready to play,” said Jaden Nieslen-Skinner.
The Saxons held a 5-0 lead before the Vikings came to life to take a 10-5 lead in the closing moments of the first quarter as they led 10-8 after one.
That three that brought South some momentum, but with a Alex Vasquez pair of Free Throws, North were even at 15 with a Saxons squad looking to break back into the win column after Friday’s loss.
“The first half, the first quarter we got mad, we were winning,” said Alex Vasquez. “The second quarter, we put our subs in and they didn’t have the same energy as the first group did so they went on a little run and they just went off that momentum.
“But to compete against a team like this that’s a big school in the whole State, that’s a accomplishment for us.”
South slowly were pulling away after Vasquez’s free throws as they were finding ways to work around a tough, up-and-coming Viking squad too looking to break back into the win column themselves as the Saxons led 32-19 at the halftime break.
The Saxons didn’t surrender their momentum to North in the second half as South sealed the 78-50 victory Saturday night as they prepare for McNary Tuesday.
“We just have to focus hard on scout, ready the scouting on them and just work hard on Monday,” said Nielsen-Skinner.”We work hard in practice, we’ll come out with the win.”
