SCIO, Ore.–The Gervais Wrestling team continue to improve as Peter McKinley (220) and Jonathan Cruz (145) both finish second in their respective weight classes Saturday as the young up-and-coming Cougars continue to improve on the mats.
“Well we did pretty good,” said McKinley. “I think, Jonathan wrestled very well, super proud of his matches and marking it to 2nd place. The rest of the guys we need to put in some more work in the mat room and learn a few more basics but they did really good.”
McKinley pinned Kane Rust from 4A’s Philomath in 1:22 of his match to get to the finals in a very successful tournament apperence; but the senior admits that his own mistakes cost him first in the tournament as he personally looks to learn and build from this himself.
“I wrestled some tough guys but that’s no excuse for me ending up second place,” said McKinley. “In the finals I made some key mistakes and loss a close one and it hurts a lot, but I gotta look past it now and work on improving. I had a chance to win it all but I let stupid mistakes get in the way so I gotta get back in the mat room with my coaches and put in some more work…a lot more work.”
Cruz battled in his finals match versus the Loggers Brandon Zeiher following his 1:15 pin of Philomath’s Jayden Jensen in the semi-final round, but was Zeiher was too much for Cruz as he was pinned by the Junior in 2:13 to finish second in his bracket.
Other notables for Gervais, Alex Giron went 1-2 at the 170 class, Stephan Chuprov went 1-2 himself at the 160 class and Zamir Cortes went o-2 in his tournament performance Saturday.
