VERNONIA, Ore.– Through three games of this season, the Gervais Boys Basketball team sit at 2-1 and you can see some developments in how the boys are adjusting to first-year Head Coach Ben Schultz and his system a week into the season.
“Speed and being coachable,” said Schultz. “We are a fast team that can be very disruptive. However, they have to learn what areas we need to be in. Slowly but surely they are getting to it.”
Following a tough loss to defending State Champions Vernoina Friday, the Cougars answered the bell and pulled off a 31-28 victory over Astoria JV Saturday as they look to carry this momentum into Tuesday’s game versus St. Paul.
“We got punched in the face good by the defending 2A champs Vernonia. Coming out from that we came into the game with Astoria down four guys. So I only had eight,” Schultz described the challenges of Saturday. “They responded well with keeping things together and our press made the difference.
“We relayed on Alex Kalugin (freshman swinger) to play well and he responded with seven points and four boards. We will carry this into next week against a good st. Paul team and Sheridan we should be fine. With the first week done we still have a lot of work to do but some positive things to work on.”
The Cougars will be on the road with the Girls Basketball team in St. Paul Tuesday night as they play the 7pm nightcap game that follows the Girls game.
GIRLS BASKETBALL- The Lady Cougars are also sitting at 2-1 after they rebounded from their first loss of the season Friday with a 36-34 victory over the JV Squad from Astoria. The Gervais girls will open up the Cougar-St. Paul doubleheader at 5:30pm. The Buckaroos sit 1-1 and are coming off a one-point loss versus Willamina Friday.
