GERVAIS, Ore.– The long awaited start to the season has finally arrived for the Boys Basketball team at Gervais High School.
And what a better way to introduce their new coach, Ben Schultz, but do it in a winning fashion with a 59-36 victory over Gaston Wednesday night.
Leading up to the game, and even the day prior, Schultz described his feelings about Wednesday as nerve racking being home for the first time in 20 years, but there was plenty of excitement there as well to see what the Cougars can do this year.
“The moments leading up to the game was nerve racking. Once the ball was tossed in the air they went away quickly,” described Schultz.
By the end of the first quarter it was 17-9 Gervais and they led by six at the half as they led at the end of every quarter in the win Wednesday.
“I think the guys played really hard,” said Schultz on the game. “Offensively we looked bad running the plays, but that will come with time. Defense was the key in the win. If we can continue to improve our defense each game we will only get better.
“I think it was a total team effort.”
Gervais. 1-0 overall and 1-0 at home. Great way to start the season.
The Cougars will now have a day off before heading up to the City of Vernonia for the Vernonia Tournament. Tip off is slated for 7pm according to the OSAA Site.
GERVAIS GIRLS 31, GASTON 20- The Girls Squad of Gervais lead the Lady Greyhounds 18-9 at the halftime break and battled through Gaston’s second half offensive surge to go 1-0 on the season as well.
The Lady Cougars will also be competing at the Vernonia Tournament this weekend as well. Tip off for them will be at 6pm at Vernonia according to the OSAA Site.
The JV Boys of Gervais also did pick up the victory as Gervais swept Gaston in all three games Wednesday night. The JV Girls did not play.
