STAYTON, Ore.– The search for 1-0 continues into Week 2 for the Eagles of Stayton as they worked this week on fixing the errors that presented themselves in their 41-28 loss to Estacada.
“We got sloppy with the football in sloppy weather,” said Eagles Head Coach Andy Campbell. “We allowed that to be a excuse and it’s unacceptable for us. We have to eliminate our excuses, eliminate our mistakes this week against a well-coached, very physical, very fast State-Contender in Banks and we’ll get a test out of them.”
Banks finished second in the Cowapa Conference in 2015 before losing to the team in Turner, meaning Cascade, in the 4A OSAA Semi-Finals game. The Braves defeated Gladstone 35-14 in Week one of the season.
Campbell knows that this Gaunlet of sorts with the Rangers and Banks gives them a look of where they’re going and will help them come Oregon West Conference time.
“There almost a mirror image of who we are,” said Campbell. “There a 3-5 defense. There a Spread Offense. It’s kind of looking at each other, there an experience group, they’re a older group so we get to see that.
“But again our focus is tough, our focus is a tough season and that just gets us ready for Oregon West play. Our goal is still win a conference title, the field is wide open and playing tougher teams versus playing cupcakes, we’re going to take licks when we can take our licks so when it’s time to give them, we know what it feels like.”
As the team wraps up their walkthrough practice, the goal reminds the same:
Go 1-0 every week.
And Campbell knows it starts from improving upon what they already know.
“Eliminate mistakes, play turnover free and ultimately we just got to play with each other,” he said. “That’s the only way experience is going to come in.”
