Roseburg Rallies To Defeat North Marion 5-2 in Single-A Playoff Opener

CENTRAL POINT, Ore.–  The legion team out of North Marion were facing a lot of adversity entering Wednesday’s Single-A Legion Baseball Tournament.

But missing three starters and having an injury mid-game didn’t slow the Huskies as they built a 2-0 lead with RBI hits from Dylan Doubrava and Nick Iliyn as their offense produced eight hits and their defense held strong against the 6A Squad in the Roseburg Pepsi Bottlecaps.

Matt Robinson had four of his six strikeouts through the first three innings of the contest for North.

“Everyone else expected them to win and we came out in the first inning and we get a run across and they were on their heels throughout the whole game,” said Doubrava.  “They fought for every run they got.  They had to put bunts down, they had to hit little dinkers, balls in play that weren’t actually really good.”

Those five runs Roseburg weren’t easy as Doubrava mentioned, hits were also earned by both teams under the heat and thick outfield grass at Anhorn Park and strong defenses by both teams.

Roseburg broke the shutout with a single in Bottom of the fourth as they tied it up at two entering the fifth as Robinson picked up his fifth and sixth strikeouts.

The Huskies had a bases loaded situation in the top of the fifth, but a double play ended the threat as the score remained at two.

Roseburg would break that tie in the bottom frame of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead en route to a 5-2 victory thanks to two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

But, though the result may not favor the Boys in Green, confidence is high for their Do-or-Die game Thursday in Central Point at noon.

“The thing is, with our team we never give up,” said lliyn.  “We’ll keep fighting and fighting and grinding.  Just have hard at-bats, no matter what the score is.  Make an error, get back up, just make the next play and that’s been our mentality the whole year.”

“Next game, play hard and we never give up.  Just keep grinding.  This game helps us, shows us, teaches us to keep fighting.”
