SACRAMENTO – It was probably too much to ask for the Rocklin High baseball team to defeat the area’s No. 1 pick Elk Grove a second time in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Playoffs and indeed the Thundering Herd prevailed Thursday night 3-1 at Sacramento City College.
The Thunder stunned Elk Grove 4-3 in their first meeting Saturday, but that would be Rocklin’s final signature win.
Monday, Davis stalled the Thunder’s momentum with a 6-1 win, putting the boys in blue into the elimination semifinal bracket against the Herd once again. But despite Sam Curtis’ six-strikeout performance, Rocklin couldn’t produce at the plate.
The Thunder highlight came when Erick Petersen hit a home run in the seventh inning to cut the lead to two. Prior to that, Elk Grove pitcher Ty Madrigal was able to hold Rocklin in check.
The Thundering Herd meets Davis this afternoon for the North title. The winner of that game will take on either Tokay or the winner of Thursday’s South matchup between St. Mary’s and Turlock. The championship series will be played at the University of the Pacific.
