So, since the July of 2012, I’ve been doing sort of a amauter-isc/freelance sports journalist approach in my writing. Covering Southern Oregon University sports game’s via previews and game stories with the rare occasion of doing a feature (see The Quarterback story from September, 2012), through a print and broadcast basis.
Now for Winter, 2013; I’ll reamp’d J-Mac Productions via a series called, “Day in the life of:”.
This series is intended to go beyond the spectrum of the preview and game stories we see on TV or in the daily sports section in the newspaper; and paint a behind-the-scene picture of, in this instance, college athletics.
My goal is to paint a picture of a college practice and gameday scenes; how is a day of a coach, a trainer and even a student-athlete (yes, athlete’s that do go to class first and play sports second); and illustrate how college sports is more than a 300 to 500 word story on how they did against Northwest University or Montana-Western University on a Saturday night.
I got the idea over winter break this past month while watching ESPN and E:60. Now I’m not saying that I will be producing any ESPN-caliber talent (even though I would love to think that I am haha), but I’ve noticed that it will be a change of pace from what I am use to as a writer.
My main subject will be the SOU sports department; in which, as I mentioned above, I’ve covered several sporting events and have talked to several coaches there on games that will or have happen.
Why do I want to do it? I am looking for ways to challenge myself as a writer and as a future sports and health communicator/writer after I get done with my studies; and I find this opportunity to challenge myself in more ways than one.
Look for the first story of this series here and/or Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/user/MJeremy1989?feature=mhee, towards the first week of February.
