NEWBERG, Ore.–  The Post 58 Single-A squad had a nice little spurt of energy in their season-opener at Newberg Thursday night when they erupted for three runs in the third inning.

It all started, trailing 5-0, with two walks sandwiched around a Gavin Cole (McNary) single before Owen Eaton (Regis) and Ben Bjornstedt (Stayton) in back-to-back Fielder’s Choice for the Post 58 squad on the board.  A double steal with runners on first and third allowed a third run to score before the inning came to an end

“We had that inning and we got some momentum, that was big for us to get three hits and get some hits on the board,” said Eaton.  “I think this first game was good to work out some kinks. We did some good things, we did some bad things and we know what we need to work on.  Going into tomorrow, we just have to flush this and focus on what’s ahead for us.”

They put the bat on the ball in their opener, but it was met by a Newberg defender in the game.  Cole’s hit was the lone hit in the 13-3, five-inning defeat to start the season.  But alas, it’s just the season-opener and there’s a ton more games left to rebound for.

Friday is one of those opportunities to learn from this game when they head to Eugene to play the Ole Athletics for a doubleheader.  An opportunity to fix those little things that Newberg showed them,

“It definitely helps us find out who our teammates are.  I’m excited to see how the rest of the season looks like, we just got to figure out our pitching.  Being aggressive is the big thing, we were kind of slacking a little bit, we got to lay-out for balls and be more aggressive,” said Cole.

The doubleheader starts at 5pm on Friday.  The home opener for the Post 58 Single-A squad will be on June 17 when they host the Columbia Gorge Hustlers at McNary High School, that game also starts at 5pm.
