STAYTON, Ore.–  With it being game week for the Stayton Eagles Girls Basketball team, it’s time to crack down and get to work for Estacada Friday night to open up another great Lady Eagles season.

What a way to do so but doing a live scrimmage against the freshman Stayton Eagles Boys Team.

“That’s why we did it,” said Girls Varsity Head Coach Darren Shryock.  “Just kind of try to get that going.  TO see real life action, it’s hard to practice against yourself as you know for a long time.  So it’s really helpful for us.

“Boys are nice to us, I’m not sure how helpful it is for them, but it’s good for them too to get out and scrimmage and that kind of stuff.  I saw some things I liked, some things to work on, but the girls are working hard and they’ve been working hard all the way through.”

What the boys offered the girls were an opportunity to see what they can improve on in between Tuesday and Friday’s game on the court like rebounding and adjusting after a turnover; but what they gave some additional looks with aggression and height.

Something they’ll see a lot of versus teams like Cascade when the season starts up here in a few days.

“I think playing against the boys will definitely going to help us playing harder against other teams,” said Alyssa Lindemann.  “It’s a lot of different play but it will definitely prepare us.”

Though a scrimmage, the girls found some confidence as they battled the boys aggressiveness; but the freshman boys got a look at what varsity speed looked like as they adjusted pretty well against the Girls Varsity team as they prepare for their own season ahead.

“They’re pretty good so it’s good competition for us to see how we do  in a real game situation,” said Ben Kirby.  “We’re getting the little mistakes out instead of waiting until the game.”

As the scrimmage wind down, both sides continued to work out issues and see where they can improve on moving on.  But there were no fun smack talking while the scrimmage were going on.

“No,” smiled and laughed Kirby.
