STAYTON, Ore.–  In their first league test of the Oregon West Conference season for the Stayton Eagles, was the team they had to beat out for their sixth-straight crown in 2015:

The North Marion Huskies.

But, they weren’t expecting the feat that David Gomez was about to do Thursday evening.

By halftime, Gomez had one of his two goals as his Eagles led 1-0 over a North Marion squad that won two of their first three games following a slow start.

Gomez will score his second of his two goals before the Huskies got that goal back, but Stayton held on for the 2-1 victory Thursday.

“David Gomez scored twice.  Courage Minten played really well,” said Head Coach Chris Shields on his thoughts on the game.  “But we came out of the game with a few injuries., (we) played well enough to win.”

The Eagles will have a few days to heal up as they prepare for their next test versus the Cubs of Newport at Newport.

Newport defeated Yamhill-Carlton 7-0 to improve to 3-0-1 in OWC play and 6-1-1 overall with the lone tie coming way of a 3-3 tie with Philomath.

JV-  In the 1-0 Stayton win over North Marion, freshman Kevan Loera score the lone goal for the Eagles.
