SALEM, Ore.– The McKay Junior Varsity squad had to go into overtime with Grants Pass Tuesday afternoon at home.

Stunned, but not out, a three-pointer by Hayden Hull restored confidence with the Royal Scots for the 75-70 victory.

“We almost turned it over that last play (of regulation),” said McKay JV Head Coach Matt Espinoza. “David (Kovalenko) hit one free throw that we needed, got to overtime and I felt like we got our confidence back.

“We were the better team and we hit a three in the first possession to get us going (in overtime).”

With a eight-point lead with a few minutes to play in regulation, the Caveman of Grants Pass capitalized on Mckay Turnovers as they took a one-point lead with seconds remaining.

Behind a free-throw by Kovalenko, the Scots forced overtime.

“I think for us, if we get a lead, sometimes we get complacent and we start doing things less aggressively,” described Espinoza on the end of the regulation.  “We’re not in the passing lanes, not getting enough ball pressure.

“We don’t have that sense of urgency as we did to start the game so it’s just keeping that mentality for the whole game.”

Behind a three-pointer by Hayden Hull confidence returned for McKay as a lay-up by Ryan Bangs gave a comfortable three-point lead that they did not relinquish.

“We responded well,” said Espinoza.  “We were fortunate to get to overtime because we made a lot of mistakes.
