OREGON CITY, Ore.– The season started maybe not as sharp as Clackamas Community College Wrestling Head Coach Josh Rhoden wanted this past weekend as the Cougars opened the season.
But there was improvement from the Cougars 20-17 duel-match win over NCAA Division-II Simon Fraser of British Columbia, Canada Saturday and their tournament success Sunday.
“I think the difference was a bit less pressure on them as was in the dual atmosphere,” described the difference between Saturday and Sunday. “We have a lot of new, young guys in the starting lineup and that showed wrestling in front of a good home crowd.
“Also, we addressed them on Saturday night about wrestling with the correct amount of pressure, intensity and effort.”
Clackamas lost the first two matches, the 125 and 133-pound matches, by decision before winning four of the next five matches as the Cougs look to carry that momentum forward of defeated a NCAA Division-II squad in the Clan.
“It is a bit different wrestling with all freshman and at maximum sophomores versus an NCAA division team who has Juniors and Seniors,” said Rhoden. “As far as momentum, yes we will definitely be building on our gains to carry that into this weekend against three very good teams!”
The team will be traveling to Redding for a tournament against what is expected to be against the best of what the Junior College level has to offer.
But first, they had their first tournament of the season in Forest Grove, which five wrestlers who finished in the Top 4 in the Mike Clock Classic.
John Morin (197) and Brandon Davidson (157) finished second in their weight brackets. Chris Garcia (149) and Tommy Brewster (165) finished third in their respective weight classes and Haszell West finished fourth in the 184-pound level.
“This weekend’s tournament in Forest Grove was a tough one and the five guys who earned top 4 finishes did a great job putting themselves in positions to win and earn that placing,” said Rhoden of his team. “This coming weekend is four-dual meets so only team results will be tallied.
“That said, we can always take the confidence earned from a tough battle into our next one which should help us in preparation for this weekend.”
With the big tournament in Redding coming up, which is hosted by Simpson University, the plan for CCC is simple.
“Now we rest today, take treatment and get ready for this coming weekend,” said Rhoden on Monday.
