With my second half-marathon coming up this Saturday with the Davis Moo-nlight race; my thoughts go from training into preparing for the race.
I’ve ran in the 2014, 11th-annual, Run Rocklin half-marathon back in April; so I’ve gained valuable experience running the craziness that is a 13.1 mile race.
However, I had to take a different approach to training for this one.
The Rocklin Half-Marathon was more hills than flat, straightaways, it was during a cooler time of day and of the year.
Whereas, Davis is looks to be primarily a flat course; which is similar to the 10-mile Pear Blossom race I ran in Medford, Oregon in April of 2013. So the course sounds like a similarity to that course.
But it will be at night, temperatures will be forecasting in the low 90s. Something I haven’t got any experience with racing.
TRAINING
My training involved 3-mile a-day, speed/treadmill training during the week that I joined with lifting and long, endurance training sessions on the weekends outside in Roseville. I had split, and even pulled double-duty, with some afternoon running so I can get accustom to the heat. I also got some walking in during the night as well to be accustom to the high temperatures.
The week of the race, I’m doing a lot of training upfront while using Thursday/Friday as recovery-days to heal physically and physiologically.
Mental Readiness/Thoughts on Race
Now, I’m still new to how to mentally get ready for races compare to when I played football in High School, I was never a runner until the last year or two but I’m taking the same mental approach to the race as I did playing football.
But my overall thoughts on the race are nervous, but I’m confident.
Nervous on if I’m gonna burn myself out before the finish-line in the short run or doing something that would hurt my chances to compete in the Granite Bay Trail Run in October. But that comes with the nature of the beast in sports; that’s why I’m still trying to do it; for the thrill of competition. Thus arriving on the confidence, because I’ve been training for this race since the Run Rocklin Half-Marathon.
Stay tuned for post-race reactions this weekend! #winning
