SACRAMENTO – Both Lincoln and Pioneer high schools entered the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division III baseball playoff title game not just for the first time, but as Cinderella teams as well.
The Pioneer baseball team eked out two runs and held the resurgent Fighting Zebras scoreless to claim the Div. III crown 2-0 Monday afternoon at Sacramento City College.
Lincoln senior ace Jake Sola took the mound and limited the Patriots to six hits, but a couple Zebras’ errors proved to be their undoing. Pioneer came into the contest scoring 25 runs in their past three games, but one was all they needed in the finale.
The Zebras’ offense struggled, picking up just three hits.
Both teams came in seeded No. 3. It was the first visit to the Div. III championship for both teams dating back to 1975. Pioneer opened its doors in 2003 and Lincoln in 1907.
PIONEER 2, LINCOLN 0
Zebras 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 – 0 3 2
Patriots 0 1 0 1 0 0 0 – 2 6 0
