In a slugfest which featured 22 runs, Vista del Lago came away a 12-10 winner over Folsom in the second game of the baseball season for both teams.

Early on, it looked like it would be all Eagles as they led 12-2 after three innings, but they withheld a late push by the Bulldogs for a two-run victory.

Pitchers and defenses on both sides struggled entering the third inning; but as Vista’s Michael Majeski began to settle in, the bats of the Eagles kept Folsom’s Weston Dewitt on his toes.

“In the first game (against Del Oro), we had poor at-bats, but in this game we played the ball we know we can,” said Bulldog head coach Gilbert Brewer.

Vista’s hot bats dinged Dewitt and defensive errors allowed for two more runs, before Dewitt relinquished the mound to Tommy Noble.

Dewitt allowed six runs on 10 hits and a ball-strike ratio of 21-20 as the Eagles took a 6-2 lead.

However, the pitching change didn’t slow Vista down, as a error on Folsom’s Tanner Seibel and a questionable call at home plate when Kevin Gough drove in two runs resulted in a 10-2 score heading into the fourth.

With a seemingly comfortable lead, Vista head coach Scott Seffens pulled his starting pitcher and some of his starters for his backups.

However, his replacement at pitcher, Nick Brown, allowed six straight walks and another base runner on a hit-by-pitch to give Folsom three runs on the board, and the Eagles led 12-7.

“When it got to 10, we try to get our guys some work,” said Seffens. “We were walking some guys, but we have confidence in our guys out there.”

Seffens made another pitching change, this time to Matthew Huddleston. Folsom’s bats then came alive, and Jacob Guzman’s hit was misread by Vista’s Michael McMahon, which plated two more runs for the Bulldogs, as they cut the lead to 12-9 before Huddleston got his team out of the inning.

Huddleston kept Folsom off the scoreboard in the sixth and recorded the first out in the seventh before giving the reigns to Kaim.

“Matt Huddleston came in and did well,” said Seffens. “It got interesting with pitching there at the end.”

Despite giving up a run to the Bulldogs on a Colton Albert RBI single with two outs, Kaim sealed the victory for the Eagles.
