Heartbreak was again the fate of the Lincoln High girls basketball team against Center, suffering a 53-52 loss Thursday night. The Fighting Zebras will close out the regular season at home game against Colfax Monday night.

At 5-4 in the Pioneer Valley League, Lincoln is tied for second place with the Falcons. The winner of Monday’s game will secure second and third place could end up a three-way tie. But the Cougars, now 4-5 would have to upset No. 1 Bear River (8-0) to stay in the race for the playoffs.

Placer, also 4-5, closes out its regular season at Foothill. If the Hillmen are victorious, they would likely be the fourth team from the PVL to make the playoffs.

In Thursday’s game, the Cougars went on a 44-25 tear in the final 19 minutes of play to steal the victory, despite a fast start by Lincoln in the first 15 minutes of the game.

The Zebras had opened a 27-9 lead with 3:35 left in the second quarter behind Cassandra Pisik’s double-double performance in the first half.

But fatigue seemed to slow the Zebras’ momentum, as turnovers and fouls allowed Center to narrow the gap, 35-23, by halftime. But Lincoln’s problems continued, as the Cougars were able to take a 40-39 lead by the end of the third quarter.

Although the Zebras’ defense helped keep the home team in the game, Lincoln could not regain the momentum.
