The Lincoln High School girls basketball team entered Pioneer Valley League play Friday against a talented 10-6 Foothill squad, winners of three of their last four games.

But the Fighting Zebra’s smothered the Mustangs talent from the opening tip, winning easily 62-46. The victory featured eight Lincoln players scoring two points and three players with at least 10; the team also had a total of 30 rebounds.

Karla McCommas had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Lincoln exploded out of the gate with an 8-3 run before Foothill rallied to cut the lead to 10-7 with 4:51 left in the first quarter. However, that small deficit was short lived as the Zebra’s built a 19-12 lead at the end of the first period.

“Our execution was important,” said head coach Tim Sprinkles. “They threw a lot of different defenses at us there; a 2-3 front, diamond defense and we responded well.”

By half’s end, the Zebra’s went up 35-20 by controlling the boards and limiting turnovers.

The Mustangs mounted a mild rally in the third quarter, as fatigue began to show a bit in Lincoln’s execution. But that soon faded as the Zebras rolled to victory.

Lincoln’s offense was balanced almost to perfection. Cassandra Pisik scored 13 points and 12 each were scored by Kelly Belding, Taylor Galli and McCommas. Galli was 4-for-6 from 3-point range.

Lincoln girls basketball fans will be treated to two home games next week. Bear River comes in Wednesday and Placer Friday. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
