Riding a three-game winning streak, the Whitney High School boys basketball team entered Capital Athletic League play at 2013 state runner-up Antelope Thursday.  The Titans were a different story, having split their last six games.

Although Antelope led most of the way, emotion would get the best of the Wildcats leading to a 52-42 Titans’ victory.

Trailing by just four points, Whitney was assessed a technical foul, after Kyle Creighton fouled out with almost three minutes remaining in the game. It was then Whitney head coach Nick French saw his team slip back into the bad habits of previous years.

“I thought we reverted back to old Whitney,” said head coach Nick French. “The technical foul, with two minutes to go with us down two or three, was the back-breaker in this one for us.”

Although great hustle and a couple baskets by Cameron Ripple and Garrett Sanderson put the ’Cats back into the game late in the fourth quarter, things unraveled after the technical.

The Titans made good on the free throws and the dye was cast. The ‘Cats were unable to mount another rally, as the Titans sealed the victory.

Turnovers and poor shooting were also factors in Whitney’s loss. Antelope was also able to capitalize on their free throws when the Wildcats were forced to foul late in the game.
