Whitney High’s football team entered its Senior Night against Cordova and emerged in a tie with Antelope for the Capital Athletic League crown. The Wildcats and Titans clash Friday for all the marbles.
Whitney opened Friday’s game with three quick touchdowns. Kwane Wilkinson scored on a 1-yard run and Drew Romo threw two touchdown passes.
Antelope roughed up Rio Americano 31-7. Both the Titans and Wildcats are 4-0 in league and 7-2 overall. They play this Friday at Antelope.
“We looked at league play and take it a play, a game, at a time. Every game is like a championship game,” said Whitney head coach Mike Gimenez, “Our philosophy all season was do what we can do. If we can play our game, we’ll be fine. We have won four “championship” games already and looking to win number five next week.”
Both clubs have players at the top of the league statistical charts.
Romo is on top in passing yardage. The Titans’ Tyler McCombs is about 550 yards behind. Romo has thrown for 17 TDs and seven interceptions; his completion average is .538.
McCombs has had eight touchdowns and six picks.
Justin Herrmann and Kris Corpus are Romo’s favorite targets, but the quarterback has completed passes to 10 different receivers and seven of the 10 have caught TD passes.
McCombs has used 15 different receivers, but only two have caught more than one TD pass – Adrian Tristan and Mister Harriel – they each have two.
Rushing, the Titans’s top carriers are Harriel (665 yards) and Titus Vinson (715 yards). Both average around 7 yards per carry and are ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in CAL stats.
Wilkinson ranks No. 5, but has just 76 carries after being injured in the second game of the season. Harriel has 103 totes, Vinson 119. Wilkinson now is back and near 100 percent.
On defense and special teams, Antelope has 14 ½ sacks, Whitney 13. The Titans’ Anthony Baumgart leads with eight. Antelope has seven interceptions and the ‘Cats five.
The Titans Joe Estrada is 31-31 in point-after-touchdown kicks and the Wildcats’ Jordan Traynor is 28-34; both are 4-5 in field goal attempts.
Against Cordova, Whitney’s defense allowed the Lancers 28 yards in the first quarter and picked off a pass.
“We had that intensity to not to give up a yard,” said senior linebacker Kyle McCray, “We took it personally when teams ran and threw deep on us and now we have come together and are clicking.”
The Lancers didn’t score until the fourth period.
“It’s strange,” said Herrmann, “we’ve grown as a family in the last four years. All of us (seniors) brought in energy, taken control and played our game.”
