It was battle of playoff positioning in the Capital Athletic League as Whitney squeak out a 13-10 victory over El Camino Thursday night.

The Eagles gathered all of their 10 points in the first half, intercepting two Wildcats’ passes. El
Camino took one the distance for a touchdown and the other set up a field goal as the half expired.

During the first half, the Wildcats had a chance to tie the game at seven apiece, after driving 65 yards capped by Nolan Squyres’ 3-yard touchdown run. However, a rare missed extra point kick kept the Eagles on top.

In the second half, Whitney dug in. The defense intercepted two El Camino passes to keep the Wildcats in the game.

Offensively, Drew Romo relaxed as he threw a touchdown pass to teammate Jason Brunet in the third quarter and he kept several drives alive for Whitney. The ‘Cats took control in the fourth quarter on a drive that took eight-plus minutes and almost ran out the clock.

With 19 seconds left, the Eagles tried a hook-and-ladder play deep in their own territory. However, an alert Whitney defense swarmed the play as the clock expired.
