After suffering its first loss of the season, the Rocklin High school girls volleyball team stormed back to defeat Vista del Lago 3-1 last week.

Maddie Haynes had 13 kills, Bethany Mandon 11 and Megan Richwine 10 in the win.

The Thunder also had 10 blocks and 28 digs. Mandon had five blocks; Jolie Meade and Megan McBroome each had four. Halle Williams had 10 digs and Richwine six; Kate Mitchell and Haynes had four apiece.

ST. FRANCIS 3, ROCKLIN 2

Rocklin entered the nonconference match against St. Francis with a spotless record, but found staying undefeated to be a difficult task.

Rocklin came out streaking to take the first set 25-13. But the pace of the game changed heading into the second set and the match became a dogfight.

Just as one team would take the lead, the other would gain enough momentum to mount a comeback.

“They made adjustments to validate their play,” said Thunder head coach Dave Muscarella, “Then we made adjustments and it just became a back-and-forth type of game.”

The second set went into overtime for a 27-25 Troubadours win; the Thunder came back to take the third set 25-22.  Rocklin had carried the momentum into the fourth set before relinquishing the lead for a 25-16 St. Francis victory.

St. Francis carried that momentum into the fifth to earn a 15-8 win, thus ending the undefeated season for the Thunder (11-1).

“Our key thing this season, so far, is our passing and serving,” said Muscarella, “But tonight, our passing and serving fell apart on us.”

WHITNEY

The Wildcats gave Woodcreek a scare before falling 3-2 last week.

MacKenzie Berlin had 17 kills and Samantha Sheldon had 11. Freshman Macey Hayden had seven kills.

Berlin led the ‘Cats in serves received with 27; Erika Holiday had 24, Hayden 12 and Paige Tomasini 11.
