After thinking and talking about it the LA Lakers, Showtime, went for Mike D’Antoni instead of the “Zen Master” Phil Jackson.

But I believe this is the right decision.

The reasoning is this; Jackson was asking for too much.  Too much management power and too much money for little coaching and a lot of time off.  He would be running the team, but at half power essentially.

LA didn’t want that, they want the power to be in house and a coach that wants to coach and will travel and be at shoot-around practices.

Enter D’Antoni.

Yes D’Antoni is a offensive master mind with no sense of defense and no rings to show for it and a knee injury that he’s waiting for clearance on to go and coach; all he needs to do is put together his all-star offense with the all-star, multi-platinum winning roster the Lakers have and just tell them to play playground basketball on defense.

Honestly too, the Lakers are looking long-term, to eventually re-build. To bring Jackson back in for three, four years won’t work because he wants too much and with him aging along with the roster; the best option for the Lakers at this point was to go younger, to get fresher legs in there to coach.

I mean, once Kobe and Steve Nash retire whenever they do, Jackson would retire too as coach, no hesitation with it; leaving the Lakers in worst shape then they are in right now at this point of the season.  No coach, no superstar and with a probably aging center in Dwight Howard and Power Forward in Pau Gasol, the Lakers best choice was D’Antoni at this point.

Now if D’Antoni starts to falter  then heavily go after Jackson; but right now, the Lakers made the right decision for coach for the future.
