In the rematch of the season, the 23rd-ranked Southern Oregon UniversityRaiders showed no let down from the first game against the Montana-Western Bulldogs this afternoon.
It looked like it was going to be a close one heading out of halftime as the Raiders had a 25-22 lead.
But in the thrid, the Raiders broke lose with a 35-point 3rd quarter en route to a 76-29 victory over the Bulldogs.
The Raiders and the Bulldogs traded blows in the first half before breaking off with three rushing touchdowns within the first half of the thrid. Two came way of Michael Olson both from one yard out; with running back Manny Barragan with the other from 10 yards out.
Austin Dodge connected with Cole McKensie from 59 yards out to go up 53-22 with 6:27 left in the 3rd to complete a one-play drive for the Raiders. Dodge finished with three touchdowns and 420 yards on the day, McKensie finished with two touchdowns on the day.
Freshman Zach Marshall scored the fifth and final Raider 3rd quarter; scoring from 16-yards out with 4:04 left in the third.
The Bulldogs broke the second half shutout via a Jeff Logan to Matt Lickford from 23-yards out to cut the Raider lead to 60-29 with 1:44 left.
Southern Oregon returned the favor on a Joesph Wiggans three-yard run following a Bulldog safety to find themselves up 69-29.
With 3:15 left in the game, the Raiders broke their “Most points in a game record” with a Chris Kammel to Zach Marshall 50-yard-touchdown pass to find themselves up 76-29.
Following this game, the Raiders have three consecutive games with at least 60 points scored in a game.
“No football in Oregon collegiate history;Ducks, Beavers Vikings or Wildcats has ever scored over 60 points in three consecutive games until today,” said head coach Craig Howard, “We started slow today. Holding a narrown three point lead we exploded for 35 points in the 3rd quarter.”
The Raiders were averaging 5.28 on the ground and 13.29 yards in the air. while picking up two sacks and recieving one interception while holding the Bulldogs to 218 yards of total offense and 17 yards rushing on defense; but the Raiders were far from perfect.
“We have yet to play a perfect game,” said Howard, “It is important to stay hungry and healthy. We have our biggest test to date hosting Carroll College on October 27th.”
Carroll College enter today as the 7th-ranked team in the NAIA and had defeated Montana-Northern 35-14 today to improve to 5-2 on the season.
For the Raiders (5-2), the big date with Carroll College is on October 27th at Raider Stadium at 1:05pm for Hall of Fame Weekend.
