Chris Johnson finally got the contract he was looking for.
The Tennessee Titans have giving the running back a $53 million contract that will span over four-years. 30 million of that is going to be guarantee.
Over the first three years, Johnson will receive $31 million over the first three years of the contract.
Johnson was set to make 1.056 million dollars this season ($880,000 of that was a base salary with the rest being guarantee).
Since coming out from East Carolina into the draft in 2008, Johnson has rushed for 4598 yards with 34 rushing touchdowns in three years in the league averaging 5 yards a carry. In 2009, he rushed for 2,006 yards, fifth best in the NFL all-time on the rushing list for a single-season. He’s also averaging 1532.67 yards a season and 11.3 rushing TDs a season, that puts him nearly on top in each category, each year.
Now the question is; does he deserve it?
Basing on stats and performance alone; yes he does for reasons I mention before. He’s one of the best backs in the league through his first three seasons of his career.
But if and when will he break down in the seasons to come? Most backs like him tend to injury themselves and/or hit a wall by 30, i.e. Shaun Alexander, Ahmad Green, etc.
The downside to this was the commotion he caused. The lengthy holdout he had, yes he deserves more than $880,000 he was schedule to make but at least Frank Gore of the San Francisco 49ers made an attempt to go to work and show that he’s willing to work and get a new contract at the same time.
Also he blasted the Titan fans. The Titans fans called him greedy for holding out and hurting the team with greed, with wanting more money. Which is true, he is hurting the team by not being there practicing and playing and learning the new system since he’s the vocal point of the running game of the Titans.
In turn, Johnson said that the fan’s are talking shit and don’t know what they are talking about and that he’s doing what’s best for the team by holding out for more money.
Now, obviously Chris Johnson deserves more money as a top back in the National Football League; but come on now Johnson, they’re more civilized ways of doing this then sitting on the couch eating potato chips and blasting fans for telling you to get off the couch and work through it like a man; that’s just childish.
