The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem Baseball, is Noah Scharer.
Noah is a sophomore outfielder and right handed pitcher for the Saxons who are currently 10-2 on the season and ranked #10. In three games last week, all against top ten teams, Noah hit .667 including two doubles. He also stole two bases and scored five times. At one point, he reached base successfully in eight consecutive plate appearances.
In the game against Mountain View on Saturday, with the Saxons trailing 5-3, Scharer took the mound in the bottom of the sixth inning, with one out and the bases loaded. He threw just one pitch, getting a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. In the top of the 7th he hit a double off the wall in straightaway centerfield to spark an improbable 3-run frame to put South in the lead, 6-5. He went back out onto the mound in the bottom of the 7th and promptly sent the heart of the Cougars’ lineup down in order to seal the win.
Earlier in the week, with the game tied 2-2 in the top of the 7th against Roseburg, Ryan started a 2-run rally by hitting a 1-out double into the left field corner.
Through 10 games Noah is hitting .441 with 5 doubles, a home run, 7 RBI, 9 stolen bases, 4 walks, and 13 runs scored. On the mound, he has yet to allow a run in 2.1 innings.
