West Salem’s Reyna Macias, Abby Evans, and Hunter Heidrick (Swimming), South Salem’s Maggie Lapray (Girls Basketball) and McNary’s Brody Roth (Boys Basketball)

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athletes of the Week, from South Salem Girls Swimming, are Sophia Buswell and Jaden Sohl.
Sophia is a sophomore and captain for the Saxons. At the district swim meet Sophia helped the South girls team take home the win. In the 200-medley relay she swam the 50 fly, helping the girls take first. In the 200 IM she got 3rd place. In the 100 fly she broke the record at prelims and won the event the next day. In the 200 free relay she helped the girls get the state qualifying time.
Jaden is a senior and also a Saxon team captain. This year at districts Jaden had some outstanding swims! He helped the team take home a district title by scoring 37 points. In the boys 200 medley relay Jaden anchored, swimming the 50 free. Jaden also won the 50 free. In the 100 free he went a lifetime best time, placing second. In the 200 free relay he split a 22.36. Jaden swam both the 50 free and 200 free relay at the state championship.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athletes of the Week, from Sprague Girls Swimming, are Nicole Stanaway and Matthew Graham.
Nicole is a senior for the Olympians. At districts she placed 3rd in the 200-freestyle, dropping over 10 seconds! She placed 2nd in the 100-butterfly, dropping 5 seconds. And she finished strong, helping her relays place 3rd in both the 200-medley relay and 200-freestyle relay. She has been working hard to re-hab a shoulder injury and we needed to redesign her training. Yet she worked through the pain, kept her head held high, and continued to work everyday to get results.
Matthew also is a senior for the Olys. Matthew won both of his individual races at districts, the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. He helped lead the relay to a 2nd place finish in the 200-freestyle relay and a 1st place finish in the 400-freestyle relay. Matthew competed at state in all four events.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athletes of the Week from West Salem Girls Swimming are Reyna Macias, Abby Evans, and Hunter Heidrick.
Reyna is a junior for the Titans. She holds the school record in the 200 backstroke. Reyna is part of a girls’ team that is undefeated and has been undefeated over the last three seasons at 21-0! Reyna, in her third year, has never seen the Titans lose. At districts Reyna won the 50 free and 100 back. She was also part of the winning 200 and 400 free relays. She competed in all four events at state. This is Reyna’s second Athlete of the Week honor for swimming.
Reyna was also honored in 2022.
Abby is a 9th grader for the Titans. She swam four events at state: the 200 free, the 100 free, the 200 free relay, and the 400 free relay. At districts Abby won all four of her events. She holds the school record in the 200 fly, 1000 free and at districts the team of Abby, Olivia Powell, Mia Piexoto, and Reyna Macias broke the school record in the 200 Free Relay. Abby excels as a student-athlete as well, she currently has a 4.00 GPA.
Hunter is also a 9th grader for the Titans. At districts Hunter won all four of his events. He swam the 200-medley relay which he swam with Kaden Oprea, Mika Oprea, and Jarrod Coy. The same foursome swam the 200 free relay at state. Hunter swam the 100 back and 100 free at state as well. Hunter is a racer! When it is time to race you can always depend on Hunter to go for it!

Maggie Lapray is a senior for the Saxons who finished 7 and 5 in conference, winning their last 4 our of 5 games. Maggie finished the regular season strong. She had 28 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists in a loss against West. She followed that up with a 15 point and 12 rebound game against Sprague and 11 points against both North and McNary to help the Saxons end on a 3-game winning streak. She has been a terrific leader for the Saxons all season long and earned a 4.0 in the classroom as well.
This is Maggie’s second Athlete of the Week honor. She was also honored as our Senior Athlete of the Year for soccer.

Brody Roth is a senior for the Celtics. The Celts finished league play at 8 wins and 4 losses with a season record of 16 and 8. At the time of Brody’s nomination he was coming of 22 points on 9 of 13 from the field and 10 rebounds at Sprague and 20 points on 7 of 12 from the field and 15 rebounds versus North. Brody is also a 4.0 student. Coach Kirch describes Brody “as an excellent representation of our program both on and off the court” who “demonstrates high character in the way he carries himself on the floor and in and around our school.”
