COLTON, Ore.– Communication was a big point of emphasis for the Gervais Girls Basketball team Monday night on the road at Colton High School.
Communicating on defense had helped the Cougars turn their five-point, 11-6 lead after the first quarter into an 29-12 halftime lead that they built upon going into the second half in their 49-23 win. Their tenth-straight in Tri-River Conference, improving to 10-0 in the process, and their 17th overall with four games remaining in the regular season.
“We need to communicate a little bit better in the first quarter because they were just getting lay-ins after lay-ins…we started communicating more and that helped us,” Angela Villegas said. “Communication is the last thing that’ll make us a good team. (Colton) is a really tough team, they’re a really aggressive team, but it was good for us. We communicated really well and we pushed through with it. It’ll prepare us, Regis is going to be a really good match-up and get us prepared for the playoffs. They put up a really good fight against us last time and I hope we can do it again.”
Gervais will host Regis on Wednesday for a 7pm tip-off. Villegas scored 11 points, including three three-pointers in the road victory. Ava Sellers also contributed three three’s with 11 points herself as well to lead the team in scoring with Villegas.
Addison English led the Vikings with eight points, who host Kennedy on Wednesday before traveling to Culver on Friday.
The Colton boys edge the Gervais boys 53-52.
