CORVALLIS, Ore.– The Silverton Girls Basketball team had one of those hot starts you would hope for in a game of this magnitude with both teams 5-0 in Mid-Willamette Conference play up to this point.
They led 31-8 in the second quarter on Corvallis, clicking on both sides to help build such a big lead on the road. And with a game like this, against a quality opponent like the Spartans, it was expected to see them make a comeback attempt. Catching the Foxes in a few lulls to under 20 on a few occasions with plenty of time for Corvallis to complete a comeback effort.
It challenged Silverton in a week where they’ll play both undefeated squads in league with the Spartans, which they succeeded 55-32 on Monday, and Crescent Valley Thursday back home in Silverton with the hope to keep their undefeated league record intact and stay ahead of the competition.
“The start was good, we got our momentum going early. We’re a super high-energy team and we knew they were going to be a high-energy team and considering how good they’re going to be and how good we knew they were going to be, that quick lead really helped us,” starts Lilly Hayashida. “At halftime our main focus was they’re a quick team, they’re scrappy and they’re a fiesty team. We knew they were going to come out wanting it. We’re going to definitely need to come out like this again, especially defending our home court (Thursday).”
The Foxes go into Thursday’s game with the Raiders as the lone undefeated team in the conference after Crescent Valley fell to Central in double-overtime Monday in Independence 62-59.Hayashida finished with 11 points. Kyleigh Brown finished with 18 points to lead all scorers and Justina Semerikov had six point for Silverton. Sofie Robel led the Spartans with 10 points, Marlee Hammer had seven points for Corvallis.
