SSBC Honorees For May 13

South Salem’s Maddie Dustin (Girls Golf), Sprague’s Sara Abbott (Girls Track), South Salem’s Rowan Thompson (Softball), McNary’s Emilie Vu McGee (Girls Tennis) and Sprague’s Chris Rogers (Baseball) were honored by the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club for the Week of May 13.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem Girls Golf, is Madelyn Dustin.
Maddie is a sophomore for the Saxons girls golf team. She shot her personal best with a 79 Saturday in the girl’s district golf tournament at Bend Country Club. She placed fourth overall with a two-day score of 164, qualifying her for the regional tournament at Tokatee. On Tuesday at Tokatee she tied her personal best, finishing 2nd. Coach Wade Buckmaster added, “Madelyn has been a solid player all season for girls golf. She is a great team member, gets along with and helps out the other girls.”

This is Maddie’s fourth AOTW award, the second for girls golf. She has also twice been an AOTW for girls basketball.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Sprague Girls Track, is Sara Abbott.
Sara is a junior for the Oly Girls Track and Field team. Sara has top district times in both the 1500 and 3000 meter runs this season and is currently 5th all-time at Sprague in the 3000 meter. Coach Brent Charles states “Sara is a leader of our team in the distance crew. We know there are even bigger things to come.”

This is Sara’s second AOTW award.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem Softball, is Rowan Thompson.

Rowan, a sophomore, pitches for the 7-3/14-7 Saxons. In South’s 8-4 victory over, at the time, first place Sprague, Rowan was 1-3 hitting with 1 RBI. In the circle she gave up just 1 hit and struck out 7 Olys in the 8-4 victory.

When the Saxons traveled over the mountain to play a doubleheader with first place Bend, who at the time was #2 in 6A, Thompson pitched both ends of the DH. In the first game, a 1-0 loss, Rowan gave up just 3 hits, 1 unearned run, and had 11 strikeouts against the hard hitting Lava Bears. She also went 1-3 at the plate. Coming right back in the second game, a 7-2 victory for the Saxons, Rowan struck out 8 and also hit a two run home run that helped propel South to the victory. South’s win broke Bend’s 31 game winning streak and also were the first earned runs that have been scored on them this year.

In South’s 10-6 win over West Salem Rowan was 3-4 at the plate and struck out 9 Titans. The following day she picked up 2 three-inning victories at Summit striking out 6 of the 6 batters she faced in the Saxon 15-0 win in the first game and then 4 of 6 batters in their 16-0 win in the second game.

This is Rowan’s second AOTW for softball.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McNary Girls Tennis, is Emilie Vu Magee.

Emilie, a sophomore, is a team captain for the Celts girls tennis team. Coach Aris Astorga wrote, “[Emilie] has been a great leader to the tennis team as a sophomore. Emilie has continued to be resilient and has been willing to put herself in uncomfortable situations to help her team. This week Emilie played a total of 8 sets over the course of 24 hours. In that span she fought back to take her singles #2 match against West Salem to 3 sets. She played Doubles #2 for the first time this season against Sprague. In those matches she led by example and exemplified a never give up attitude, even in situations that were unfamiliar. Emilie finished the week off by playing Singles #1 for only the second time this season against McKay and winning her match in 3 sets which gave her team the victory.”

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Sprague Baseball, is Chris Rogers.


Chris, a Senior, plays middle infield for the 6-3/17-6 Olys. Chris had an excellent week at the plate last week. As Sprague wrapped up three wins versus Mountain View, South, and McNary, Chris was hitting .481 with 7 hits including 2 doubles and a triple. He had 3 RBIs and 3 steals while recording a .650 on base percentage. Coach Luke Buchheit added, “Chris Rogers is our team captain and is one of the best players on this years ball club. He is a returning 1st team all-league player form last year and hopes to continue his tear on the baseball diamond.”
