Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Honorees For April 15

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club honored Blanchet’s Drew Bartels (Baseball), McKay’s Bub Jallow (Boys Track and Field), West Salem’s Brady Bliven (Boys Track and Field), Sprague’s Tirzah Tarbox (Girls Tennis), McKay’s Stephanie Urenda (Girls Track and Field) and South Salem’s Erin Cridge (Girls Tennis) for the week of April 15)

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Blanchet Catholic Baseball, is Drew Bartels.

Drew, a freshman, is an infielder and pitcher for the 9-1 Cavaliers. In three games last week Drew had 8 hits, 7 RBIs and scored 7 runs while hitting .800. Drew also threw 2 innings with no runs allowed and 5 strikeouts.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McKay Boys Track, is Buba Jallow.

Buba is a senior for the Scots. In the Titan Track Classic Buba finished 5th in the 200 meters and anchored the 2nd place 4×400 meter relay team that recorded a league leading time of 3:36.78. He won the 100- and 200-meter races at the Sprague Dual meet. Coach Curtis Everetts added, “This is Buba’s first year doing track and he is improving every day and we are excited to see what he can accomplish by the end of the season.”

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from West Salem Boys Track, is Brady Bliven.

Brady is a junior for the Titans. At Friday’s 13-team Titan Track Classic Brady won the 1500 and 800-meter races, finishing the 800 in a personal and league best time.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Sprague Girls Tennis, is Tirzah Tarbox.

Tirzah is a sophomore for the Olys. Tirzah played #1 singles on a very chilly, windy, and snowy one-day Bend “crossover” vs. Bend and Summit high schools. She won the Bend match 6-2, 6-3 and finished off Summit 6-1, 6-1. According to coach Jennifer Schmelling, “windy conditions started during the first match of the day at 11:00 and worsened for the second match at 2:15. Tirzah played with confidence and increased the control of play with each game.”

Tirzah was also honored for tennis in 2021.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McKay Girls Track and Field, is Stephanie Urenda.

Stephanie, a jumper and sprinter, is a senior for the Scots. In the 13-team Titan Classic Stephanie finished 1st in the 400 meters, 3rd in the long jump, and anchored a 4th and 2nd place finish in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays, respectively. In the dual meet at Sprague she won the 200 meter and long jump and was a member on the 4×100 and 4×400 winning relays. Coach Curtis Everetts added, “Stephanie is a captain of the track team and one of the hardest workers on the track.”

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem Girls Tennis, is Erin Cridge.

Erin is a senior and a four-year athlete for the Saxons. Against Grant High School she competed at #1 singles against a very impressive and tough opponent, winning the match 6-2, 6-2. Erin was again victorious against West Albany 6-0, 6-0 thus giving up only 4 games in total in two matches at #1 singles. Coach Nancy Cox added, “Erin is a South IB student carrying a very difficult class schedule and is currently preparing for her final IB exams. This makes for a difficult balancing act between athletics and academics. She is also an excellent violinist involved in South’s Orchestra. Erin was one of my students at Illahe Hills Country Club several years back so I had the pleasure of introducing her to the game. The team has even named a shot after her incredible top spin lob dubbing it THE CRIDGE!!!”

Erin was also honored as an AOTW in 2021.
