STAYTON, Ore.—Regis came to play to open the 2A/1A Special District 3 play Tuesday afternoon against Central Linn.
The Rams were aggressive at the plate. Ten runs off of eight hits, three resulting in doubles. Two of the doubles belonged to Kollin Schumacher as the sophomore led the Regis offense with his 3-for-3 and 4RBI day.
“For our first league game of the season, I thought we did pretty good and carried out with that for the rest of the season I think will be good. Just be out there being aggressive early and not getting behind in the count,” Schumacher said. “Just taking advantage of the slow pitchers with the slow leg kicks, more stolen bases really.”
What’s interesting too is that the Rams stole eight bases in the win. Schmacher, Noah Koenig and Tanner Manning each stole two bags each. Manning and Koenig anchored the defense with Manning giving his offense the confidence boost they need.
In the four innings the senior-turned-pitcher pitched, Manning struck out nine and allowed just a first inning hit before turning it over to Byson Nygren in the fifth inning. Nygren continued the momentum in the fifth inning with a two-strikeout, no-hit inning as Koenig (2RBI double) and Schmacher (RBI single) turned the then 7-0 lead into the 10-0 result in the bottom half of the inning.
“Both our pitchers are very consistent, so it was easy on my part,” said Koenig, who caught the game. “But being able to set that tone early was a great job for us.”
Bryson Roes recorded the lone hit for the Cobras with the series turning to Central Linn on Friday for a 2pm and 4:30pm doubleheader.
