SSBC Honorees For February 18

SALEM, Ore.– The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club honored West Salem’s Mya Adams (Girls Basketball), West Salem’s Mika Oprea (Girls Swimming), South Salem’s Will LaDuca (Boys Swimming), McKay’s Patricia Mike (Girls Basketball), Salem Academy’s John Pass (Boys Basketball) and Salem Academy’s Bailey Pederson (Girls Basketball).

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from West Salem Girls Basketball, is Mya Adams.

Mya, a senior, plays guard for the Titans who are 11-1 in league and ranked 15th in 6A. Mya was a leader in the key 57-48 win over South at the beginning of February. She had 23 points on 54% shooting and added 4 boards, 4 assists, 3 steals, and a block. Coach Katie Singleton said about Mya, “She is a great leader for our team and stepped up to help us get a tough win.” Coach added, “Mya is a fantastic player and has been a critical part to our success and wins. Over a 5-game span she averaged 15 ppg on 52% shooting, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3.5 steals. Mya is also a great leader and loved by her teammates.”

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from West Salem Boys Swimming, is Mika Oprea.

Mika is a sophomore swimmer for the Titans. Mika was team co-MVP against Sprague and Silverton where he earned 14 and 12 points respectively. At Silverton he earned two lifetime-best times: in the 50 free and 200 free. At last week’s Mountain Valley Conference Championship Meet he was the team MVP and was the highest placer for West Salem earning 4th place in the 100 breast.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem Boys Swimming, is Will LaDuca.

Will is a senior swimmer for the Saxons. He scored 28 points to help South earn a 2nd place finish at the Mountain Valley Conference Championship Meet. He was a member of the 2nd place 200 medley and 400 free relays. He also finished 5th in the 50 free and 5th in the 100 free. He will be a member of the 400 relay swimming at the OSAA State Championship Meet.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McKay Girls Basketball, is Patricia Mike.

Patricia, a 9th grader, plays guard for the Royal Scots. Patricia helped McKay to their first league victory last week with a 43-37 win over Sprague. She scored 17 points including two 3’s and was 9 for 11 from the free throw line. She also grabbed 5 boards and had 5 assists. Coach Jim White added, “We are a very young and inexperienced, but ‘P Lou’ has taken this team on her back to learn and help her teammates get better. She is very coachable and has learned to be a leader and an extension of the coaches on the floor. She understands this is a process and only good things will come with putting in the work!”

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Salem Academy Boys Basketball, is John Pass.

John, a senior, is a guard for the Crusaders who went undefeated in league with a 16-0 record, 20-4 overall, and ranked #2 in 2A. In the 60-48 win over Western Christian he had 23 points, 5 boards, 2 assists, and 3 steals. In the 59-45 win over Kennedy he had 17 points, 5 boards, and 4 assists. Coach Ben Brown added, “As our point guard John leads by example on both ends of the floor, patiently running and executing our offense while scoring and distributing for others. Defensively he’s a physical presence with steals and rebounds, locking down other teams’ scorers.”

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Salem Academy Girls Basketball, is Bailey Pederson.

Bailey, a senior, plays guard for the Crusaders who are 13-1 in league, 22-3 for the season, and ranked #1 in 2A. Last week Bailey helped Salem Academy seal up a shared league title with Gervais who they split with during the regular season. During the week she averaged 12 points on 50% shooting from beyond the arc to go along with 3 boards, 6 assists, and 3 steals a game.
