JEFFERSON, Ore.– Replacing two key starters in Leon Romo and Danny Aguilar will be big holes to fill. Especially at the point guard position where Aguilar was the starter for the four-years the 2021 Lions-grad was placed at. Navigating the offense and setting up their shooters that helped Jefferson reach the postseason in 2019, 2020 and the Cumulative Week playoffs this past Spring.
It’s expected that it’ll be a situational package deal in which the Lions will rotate athletes like Aguilar’s younger brother Diego and Zach Wusstig at that point guard position to fill the void left by the older Aguilar’s recent graduation.
“It’ll be really big. We lost a really big facilitator; he was able to move it and was able to see an open guy. So, we have to really have to look for our teammates like he was, he was a big part of our defense too,” said Diego Aguilar of his older brother. “We have to fill that spot and have to give 120-percent because he was making a whole bunch of plays, he was busting his butt so we really have to push.”
Despite losing two key players, Jefferson returns a core group of returners from their 13-4 Spring season. Cody Jurgen, Jace Aguilar and Elijah Stelly all return and join Aguilar and Wusstig with Stelley returning healthy after missing the second half of this past season due to a calf injury.
“It’s great to finally be able to play. It feels great…We have experienced guys,” Stelly said.
Jefferson opens the season December 1 when they host Santiam at 7:30pm at Jefferson High School.
