High schools sports matter!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem Boys Soccer, is Nathan Martinez. Nathan, a senior and team captain, is a midfielder for the 4-2-2 Saxons. In the 3-2 win over Westview Nathan scored a 7-minute hat-trick – waiting for the last seven minutes of the game to erase a 2-nil deficit and earn the win. Coach Eric Johansen always provides great play description: “Westview scored a PK in the first minute of the match. Then, with about 12 minutes remaining, as we were pressing for the equalizer, they scored again on a counter-attack breakaway. With 7 minutes remaining, we were awarded a penalty kick and Nathan converted. Two minutes later, it was all even when Nathan played a left-footed shot from well outside the box on our right side. The ball rolled through a forest of legs and past the keeper into the net. Two minutes later, we were awarded a second penalty kick. Nathan converted his second PK for the night and secured a hat-trick of goals for himself.” Congratulations Nathan from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McKay Football, is Kyrin Fuimaono. Kyrin, a sophomore and team captain, is the quarterback for the 2-2 Scots. In the 31-28 win over Forest Grove Kyrin completed 22 of 34 passes for 298 yards and 4 touchdowns. Coach Brandis Piper added, “He continually stepped up and made huge throws and was able to extend plays and find receivers downfield when we needed. In addition, Kyrin is a captain for our team and great sideline presence who works to keep his teammates checked in and energetic for the game. He is a true leader on and off the field.” Congratulations Kyrin from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Sprague Boys Soccer, is Brody Whetzel. Brody, a senior and team captain,is a goalkeeper for the 2-5-1 Olys. Brody had ten saves to preserve a 0-0 tie against a tough McDaniel team last week. Coach Juan Perez had the following to say about Brody’s performance,“Whetzel is a fundamental piece to our squad with his goalkeeping skills, but most importantly the leadership role he conducts. He has been key to the re-building process we are pushing for at Sprague. Having a natural leader like him in your program is simply phenomenal. In a very tough end of our non-league schedule, Whetzel has led the boys to end on a positive note and prepare to take on our next challenges as we have entered our league schedule in one of the toughest conferences the state has.” Congratulations Brody from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McNary Girls Soccer, is Hannah Ferguson. Hannah, a sophomore, is the goalkeeper for the 6-2 Celtics. In their six wins the Celtics have only allowed three goals including four shutouts. Coach Lauren Brouse explained that “Hannah stepped in as McNary’s goalkeeper knowing she had experience, and as a leader, knew she could handle splitting field and keeper time. Recently she has been the full time keeper for McNary. Hannah has had shutouts the last three games to help McNary get the wins. In her game against Franklin last Thursday … she had ten saves to keep a shutout and allow McNary to keep their 1-0 lead.“ Congratulations Hannah from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Sprague Volleyball, is Sidney Friesen. Sidney, a sophomore, is an outside hitter for the 8-7 Olys. In the 2-3 loss to West Salem, Sidney had 11 kills and a .280 hitting percentage. In the Central Catholic tourney where the Olys went 4-1 she had 37 kills and a .243 hitting percentage. In the 3-1 league win over Mountain View Sidney had 16 kills, 2 aces, and 16 digs. Coach Anne Olsen added that Sidney, “made varsity as a freshman and has stepped up this year as a sophomore to be a real threat on the outside. She brings energy and excitement to the team and is one of the hardest workers out there on the court.” Congratulations Sidney from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Blanchet Girls Soccer, is Ellie Pearson. Ellie, a senior and team captain, plays sweeper for the 5-3-1 Cavaliers. As sweeper, a defensive position, she also carries some key offensive roles including taking all of the team’s goal kicks, free kicks, and corner kicks. In the 5-1 win over Taft Ellie earned four assists all from corner kicks. The kicks came in a key 20-minute span in the second half when Blanchet blew the game open. Coach Tina Pearson added, “The corner kick crosses she served up perfectly each time allowed our team to run our set play and be successful each time our opponent gave up a corner. We had six corner kicks this game and we scored four of them. It is not often that players get recognized for assisting in a game but this accomplishment is something we feel is worthy of recognition. Ellie is also the captain of her team and plays with continued passion, determination and sportsmanship. Her attitude reflects her leadership.” Congratulations Ellie from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!
