The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem Volleyball, is Laila Leaks. Laila, a senior, is a setter for the 4-1 Saxons. In the 3-2 Mountain Valley Conference opening match win over West, Laila led the team with 31 assists, 3 aces, 3 blocks, and 10 digs. She followed that up with 22 assists, 3 aces, 6 kills, and 5 digs in a 3-0 win over McNary. Coach Matt Leichty says, “She has helped our team get off to a solid start this season with her great play, effort, and leadership. Laila has continued to grow as a player and leader in our program, and has played a big role in helping our team to maintain composure and finish well in some tough early matches to begin the season.” Congratulations Laila from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McNary Football, is Zane Aicher. Zane, a senior and team captain, plays running back and safety for the 2-0 Celts. Coach Jeff Auvinen says Zane “had a great game [versus Newberg in a 17-14 win] on both sides of the ball. On offense, he had 17 carries for 107 yards and 1 reception for 6 yards. On defense, he had 7 solo tackles. He is also a captain, 4.0 student, and an amazing human.” Congratulations Zane from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem Boys Soccer, is Max Yermachenkov. Max, a junior, is a forward for the undefeated (3-0-2) Saxons. Max scored a hat trick in the season opening 6-2 win over the Grant Generals. Coach Johansen described Max’s efforts: “Max’s first goal came in the 7th minute when he flicked the ball past their keeper off a long throw-in by senior defender Javi Rey Rosa. In the second half, Max Y scored his second off another long throw-in by Javi in the 46th minute, this time finishing with his head. Two minutes later, Max completed his first ever Saxon Soccer varsity hat-trick, heading in another long throw-in, this time from the other side of the field, provided by senior defender Blake Dempster. Interestingly, Max Y is the second shortest player on our team. For his efforts, Max was named Man of the Match, and was also nick-named ‘Mad Max’ by Coach Jaime Rodriguez.” Congratulations Max from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Blanchet Girls Soccer, is Rebecca O’Dell. Rebecca, a senior, is a captain and plays forward for the 3-1 Cavaliers. Rebecca had a hat trick (3 goals) in a 3-0 win over local rival Salem Academy. Coach Tina Pearson added, “Her goals were scored by beating the defense and attacking offensively, one on one with SAC’s goalie, scoring 3 goals during the game. She is one of our most skilled players. As a captain she brings passion and determination every game.” Congratulations Rebecca from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Sprague Football, is Logan Smith. Logan, a senior and team captain, is the starting quarterback for the 2-0 Olys. In the wins over Corvallis 41-20, and Century 40-14, Logan is 32 of 47 in the air, nearly 70%, for 513 yards and 8 touchdowns. This performance currently puts Sara as the top-ranked female runner in the Mountain Valley [Conference]. Sara worked hard all summer training with her teammates and is looking forward to a challenging season as she enters her junior year.” Kramer added about Sara and boys leader Tucker Piper that, “both Sara and Tucker have been inspirational leaders for the team, helping to build a positive and competitive atmosphere that is fun and inviting for runners of all abilities.
