Here’s the press release.
First Athletes of the Week for the 2021-22 school year.
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McKay Football, is Chansse Lee. Chansse, a senior captain, is a wide receiver and linebacker for the Scots. In the season opening 25-20 win over Rex Putnam Chansse was busy on both sides of the ball. He had 5 catches for 85 yards and 2 touchdowns, and then defensively recorded 10 tackles with 3 sacks. He even had an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on special teams. Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Chansse!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Sprague Girls Soccer, is Amity Rogers. Amity, a sophomore, plays forward for the undefeated Olys. In the 5-1 win over Liberty, Amity had a brace (two goals) while adding another two assists. In the 6-1 win over McDaniel HS, formerly Madison, of the Portland Interscholastic League, Amity netted another brace while adding two more assists. Coach Kevin Plechl added, “Amity is developing well as a #9 for us this season. She was formally a winger, but her work rate, ability to hold the ball under pressure, and desire to fight and win challenges, makes her a great fit for that position. In addition, she is a real scoring threat. She is off to a strong start this season. I have to remind myself, she’s only a sophomore, but she is playing like a true veteran.” Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Amity!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McNary Girls Soccer, is Tessa Fisher. Tessa, a junior, is a captain and midfielder for the Celts. Against Westview of the Metro League, McNary fell to a 4-0 deficit. However, Tessa calmly helped rally her team to a 1-1 second half, scoring the lone goal on a penalty kick. Against Sandy HS Tessa scored the first goal of the game early on, but Sandy came back to tie it. In the second half Tessa again made a PK to help McNary go on to a 3-1 win. That’s three of McNary’s first four goals on the season for Tessa and the 3-1 Celts. Congratulations Tessa from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from North Salem Football, is Jerrik Wangler. Jerrik, a sophomore, is in his second year as a starter for the Vikings. In North’s 48-28 win over Roosevelt Jerrik had 18 carries for 118 yards and a touchdown while racking up 5 tackles (one for loss), a sack, and 2 forced fumbles. Coach Jeff Flood added, “Jerrik is one of the most complete football players we have had in our program. He is an excellent defensive player with a great instinct for the game. He started at linebacker for us as a freshman last year and has added the responsibility of starting at fullback on offense this year. He led our team in tackles as well as yards rushing this past week against Roosevelt and made the play of the game by chasing down a receiver from behind and not only kept him from scoring but was able to force and recover the fumble. He is a quiet leader who continues to make plays on both sides of the ball. We are extremely fortunate to have him in our program.” Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Jerrik!
