JEFFERSON, Ore.– It wasn’t how they were hoping to end their season, but they’re happy they got to play as Jefferson ended their season with a 7-7 season following their season-ending defeat to Central Linn 55-33 Saturday afternoon.
“It feels really good, I’m so happy we were able to get that last experience. I’m sure I did too but it was really good,” Senior Cassie Cheever said.
Cheever and Saige Garland played their final game in a Lions Uniform, Cheever collecting a point to Garland’s three-pointer in the fourth quarter.
The game was tough. Central Linn brought the pressure, causing Jefferson to turn the ball over and capitalizing it on the other end of the court for transition points as the Cobras prepared for the 2A Postseason starting Monday.
But the Lions kept fighting. They had a 6-2 run in the first quarter that brought Jefferson to within seven of Central Linn, they fought for rebounds and tried to build some consistency against the Central Valley Conference Champions in front of them.
It’s a good experience for Jefferson nonetheless as they’ll return a solid core from this year’s squad for the winter, only losing their two Seniors in Cheever and Garland.
It’s a great learning experience for all of us to learn to work together and work through hard things because it’s never going to be easy. There’s going to be things that’ll come up,” Emily Kunkel said. “We just need to work together and take care of the ball, we just need to stay calm and make sure that we’re doing the right things.”
Kunkel led the Lions with ten points. Nashea Wilson contributed another nine. Central Linn’s Ryleigh Nofziger had a game-high 17 points and Gemma Rowland added another 10 in the win.
