By Jeremy McDonald

Blanchet’s Sabastian Ramos (Swimming), McNary’s Bekah Grimmer (Girls Basketball), McNary’s Jonathan Canchola (Wrestling), and South Salem’s Jacquie Wadsworth (Girls Basketball) were honored as Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Honorees for the Week of June 11.

Here is the Press Release:

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Blanchet Boys Swimming, is Sabastian Ramos. Sabastian, a junior, has swam the 100 back, the 100 free, the 200 free, and the 500 free, in addition to the 200 medley and 400 free relays. From Blanchet swim coach Hannah Bauer, “A few days before our first meet, occurring a mere 8 practices into the season and for which we were already missing part of the team, Sebastian let me know he had an interview as part of his Career Technical Education Center schooling, which he does on top of full-time school at Blanchet. He said he could attend [the interview] over Zoom if we’d let him do both. Easy decision. The meet kicked off with Sebastian sequestered in the athletic director’s office. Right before his race, he closed his laptop. I opened the door and asked if he could be on the block within 30 seconds. Quick change from button down shirt to speedo and he was off with the start buzzer. In the first meet of the season, he swam his 100 freestyle race right on his personal best time… Since nominating him, he has gone on to win races at each meet. In our second meet of the season, he won the 100 back … The next day he won the 500 freestyle … At our most recent meet, he won the 200 freestyle … He is a quiet leader and an enthusiastic supporter of his team. For his commitment to his academic and professional goals, his personal performance and his support of his team, I am proud to nominate Sebastian Ramos for athlete of the week.” Congratulations Sabastian from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McNary Girls Basketball, is Bekah Grimmer. Coach Liz Doran says Bekah, a senior, “has been a strong inside presence for McNary for the past 3 years”. She is “having a great year for the Celts” and is “a vocal leader for our team on and off the court”. In recent games she had 19 points and 6 rebounds versus McKay and 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists versus South Albany, Bekah is averaging 10.6 pts and 4.7 rebounds per game on the season. She is also leading the team in free-throw percentage, shooting 80.0% from the line. Bekah plans to play basketball for the Chemeketa Storm next year. Great job Bekah, from Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McNary Wrestling, is Jonathan Canchola. Jonathan, a junior, wrestles in the 138 pound weight class for the Celts. Last week he had four matches and in all four had a first round pin. His record at the time of his nomination for Athlete of the Week was 8-0, with all his wins coming by pin fall. From coach Sam Martin, “This is a direct result of his work ethic, and his effort. He is one of the hardest workers in our wrestling room and is a fantastic example of someone who does things the right way. Jonathan’s work ethic extends beyond the wrestling room … [H]e excels in the classroom as well. Jonathan is respectful to everyone he interacts with, works hard, does everything with integrity. Jonathan is the embodiment of the McNary Wrestling Program.” Congratulations Jonathan, from Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem Girls Basketball, is Jacquie Wadsworth. In recent games she has averaged 12.8 points and 5.1 rebounds. She also has been a defensive disrupter averaging 4.3 deflections. Over the past four games Jacquie has averaged 12.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.3 deflections, and 1 assist. Against Silverton (7-1) she scored 17 points, against Corvallis (8-0) she had 14 points, and versus Crescent Valley (6-3) Jacquie had 12 points. She is currently second in points and deflections for the Saxons. Coach Adrian Lewis says, “She loves her teammates, and the coaches appreciate all of the time she has put in for the program.” Jacquie, a senior, was also a valuable member of the ‘19-20 Saxon team that made the final eight and won their first-round game at the Chiles Center before the tournament was shut down due to COVID. Well done Jacquie, from Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!
