Here’s the Press Release
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from West Salem Baseball, is Wilson Neitzel. Wilson, a senior, is an outfielder for the 12-1 (4-0) Titans. In 4 games Wilson has 7 hits, 4 RBI and 2 runs scored, while hitting .583 and recording a stolen base. Coach Taylor Blair added that Wilson is “The true meaning of what it means to be a Titan baseball player. He is the ultimate teammate. He is a leader and overall a great person. Wilson is such a pleasure to have around, and I have had the opportunity and pleasure to have coached Wilson at the varsity level since he was a sophomore. I can’t say enough great things about the guy. So proud of him and he is so deserving of this award.” Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Wilson!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Sprague Girls Tennis, is Tirzah Tarbox. Tirzah, a freshman, is playing #1 singles for the Olys. Tirzah is undefeated on the season, going 7-0 in singles while winning six of the matches in two sets and never losing more than 3 games. Her toughest challenge came from Kerry Lin of Crescent Valley who took the first set 3-6. But Tirzah showed mental toughness, tying the match with a 6-3 reversal of fortune and breaking the tie with a 6-4 win. She also teamed up with senior Eva Hammond, a previous SSBC Athlete of the Week, for a 6-1, 6-0 dubs victory over South. Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Tirzah!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem Boys Tennis, is Pranav Ramesh. Pranav, a senior, is a second-year co-captain for the Saxons. Pranav, 8-1 on the season, has played mostly at the #1 singles position and has won 16 of 18 sets on the season. Coach James Heyen adds, “Whether it’s setting an example of working hard on the court, listening to and responding to coaching, agreeing to sit out a match against a weaker team so that JV players could get more match experience, or offering to assist the coaches off the court, Pranav has excelled. He has done this while maintaining an outstanding overall GPA and graduating with an IB diploma. Pranav – along with a player from the girl’s team (Esha Puri) – established the non-profit Connect Oregon Students at the end of 2020 to help K-12 students navigate the difficulties of distance learning during the COVID pandemic. Pranav is a remarkable young man!” Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Pranav!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem Girls Golf, is Madelyn Dustin. Madelyn is a 9th grader for the Saxons. She has led each tournament so far this season. With 9-hole scores of 41 at the Santiam and McNary Golf Clubs, she also recorded a 40 at Cross Creek. This week she shot a 42 on the front nine at Salem Golf Club and recorded an 80 (41/39) for the season’s first 18 at Trysting Tree in Corvallis on Tuesday. Coach Wade Buckmaster added, “Madelyn has been a solid player all season for girls golf. She is a great team member and gets along with and helps out the other girls.” Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Madelyn!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from West Salem Boys Track and Field, is Tyce Chaney. Tyce is a junior for the Titans. In the dual meet versus McNary last week Tyce won the 400 meters with a time of 49.88, recording the 3rd fastest time in the state currently. He also won the 200 meters with a time of 22.93 and was the anchor on the 4×100 which won with a time of 43.84, the 6th best time in the state this year. Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Tyce!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McNary Softball, is Heather Ebner. Heather, a sophomore, catches for the 13-0 Celts. In the last 8 games Heather is hitting .615 with 16 hits – 12 singles and 4 home runs while tallying 16 RBI and 7 runs. Coach Kevin Wise added, “Heather … has taken over the role of catcher because of her leadership abilities. She is only a sophomore but came in last year, even though the season was lost, and started taking on a leadership role. She works very hard at getting better every day and is constantly asking what she can do to get better. Heather is a great teammate and has a huge heart for all of the girls on the team. One of the things that stands out to me, and this is rare in today’s game, Heather will always go to each coach after a practice or a game and thank them individually. She also makes it a point to thank the umpires if she can reach them before they leave. A rare and excellent quality!!” Congratulations Heather from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!
