AMITY, Ore.– Hallee Hughes has finally gotten an opportunity at the High School-level to show what she can do. Having done USATF events before, the Willamina sophomore is used to the big pressure situations like the one she was in Wednesday and Thursday at the 3A Special District 2 District Meet at Amity High School.
“It has definitely helped because it helps you see how other people throw in different leagues, different states. It’s fun to throw with a lot more diverse groups instead of a small town,” Hughes said.
Wednesday Hughes, a sophomore, won the javelin and the discus events in her first district meet after her freshman season was canceled due to the Coronavirus Pandemic a week or two into her freshman season in 2020. Joining Kallie Schoenbachler (Triple Jump) and Kaleb Floyd (3,000 meter) in getting one of the State-bids out of the District Meet.
Hughes also finished fifth in the shot put and Triple Jump, the latter happening on Thursday and just her second time participating in the event.
“I think I did ok, I mean I could have done better. I scratched way too much,” said Hughes of the Triple Jump. “I need to put more time into it next season, we’ll have a longer season. Work on techniques and things like that. I’m looking forward to next year.
“I was really happy with my throws. It was really cool that I got to do that.”
The 3A State Meet is slated for May 18 at Harrisburg High School. Start time of the meet is at 10am.
