SALEM, Ore.– Lacey Vasas (McNary, softball), Esha Puri (South Salem, Girls Tennis), Carter Cook (Sprague, Track and Field)and Broderick Stanaway were honored by the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club for the Week of April 23.

Here’s the Press Release:

Salem Sports and Breakfast Club (since 1954)

Les Schwab (since 2013) Athletes of the Week

April 23rd, 2021
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McNary Softball, is Lacey Vasas. Lacey, a sophomore, is the pitcher for the 4-0 Celts. Through the first 3 games she allowed only 3 hits and no runs while recording 16 strikeouts. Lacey has a 0.00 ERA and .073 batting average against her. She is also getting it done at the plate where she has a .429 batting average which includes 3 RBIs. This week she improved her stats throwing a 3 hit, 4 strikeout shutout, in Wednesday’s 10 to 0 win over West Salem after pitching a two-hitter in a 10-0 win over South Salem on Monday. Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Lacey!

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem Girls Tennis, is Esha Puri. Esha is a senior for the Saxons. Esha has earned four varsity letters and is a repeating team captain. She competed in the number 2 singles spot for the first three matches this season after playing little to no tennis over the past year due to Covid and academic and work commitments. After a shaky start in match one she won her last two matches solidly against Silverton and Crescent Valley. After describing Esha’s full International Baccalaureate load, and her two non-profits that help connect students needing assistance with those who can help, Coach Cox added the following: “Esha’s tennis is very solid but what she will be remembered most for on our team and by other teams is her sportsmanship, kindness, and caring manner toward others. She is the most supportive partner in doubles, pulls for her teammates and always makes her opponents and their coaches comment on her etiquette. That is Esha whether she is winning or losing. She is a stellar human being and deserving of the Athlete of the Week honors on or off the court. I have been truly honored to coach her and hope that our relationship continues far beyond tennis. They don’t come much better than Esha Puri.” Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Esha!

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Sprague Track and Field, is Carter Cook. Carter, a senior, competes in the high jump for the Olympians. In the first meet of the season, the first meet since 2019, Carter went 6’6”, nearing the 6’8” he hit during the district meet in 2019. Carter will be attending Utah Valley University in the fall and will be participating in track and field. His goal is to clear 6’11” this season, a goal that will allow him to best the current school record. Sprague coach Brent Charles added that Carter “Works very hard and has been very committed to doing well in the HJ since he was in Middle School. We’re sorry that he missed his junior year and is only getting a shortened season for his senior year—HOWEVER, we are happy to have any season and thank you very much for recognizing his efforts!!!!” Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Carter!

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week from Sprague Baseball is Brodrick Stanaway. Brodrick, a senior, is a pitcher and outfielder for the 5-0 Olympians. He is committed to play at Linn-Benton Community College next year. In last week’s blowout over PIL’s Cleveland high school, Brodrick threw a complete game no hitter. He threw 82 Pitches striking out 8 batters and walking 2 batters to complete his no hitter. Dominant from the get go, he had an 88% first pitch strike percentage that helped him get ahead of hitters often and early. Coach Buchheit added that “Brodrick has put in the time and now it is finally paying off.” Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Brodrick!
