McKay’s Sarah Cortes (Volleyball), South Salem’s Laila Leaks (Volleyball(, South Salem’s Nathan Martinez (Boys Soccer) and Sprague’s Logan Smith (Football) were named to April 9’s Salem Sports and Breakfast Club.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from McKay Volleyball, is Sarah Cortes. Sarah, a senior and captain, is an outsider hitter for the Scots. Sarah led her team with 2 triple doubles and 6 double doubles racking up over 142 kills, 169 digs, and 45 Aces. Sarah will end her high school volleyball career as second all-time in kills and aces at McKay. From coach Scott Coons: “All of these stat’s pale in comparison to the intangibles that she brings to the team in leadership, ability to read offense and defense, resiliency, and her ability to connect to each of her teammates. Her mindset to be a great servant leader and to build those around her is truly exceptional!” Congratulations Sarah from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week from South Salem Volleyball is Laila Leaks. Laila, a junior, is the starting setter for the 12-0 Saxons. Laila produced a big effort in the tough 3-2 win over West Albany, with 46 assists, 10 digs, 3 aces, and 8 blocks. In the 3-set win over West Salem she had 28 assists, 12 digs, an ace, and 3 blocks. Coach Leichty writes, “She has been a great leader for us as a setter this season and has helped our offense run very smoothly. She also scores a lot of points for us with her serving and blocking. She has made really good decisions leading our offense and has helped us play very consistently despite minimal practices in this short season.” Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Laila!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem Boys Soccer, is Nathan Martinez. Nathan, a junior and team captain, plays forward for the 10-0-1 Saxons. Against McNary on March 22, Nathan scored the second goal in a 3-1 win when he received the ball down the left wing and fooled the keeper with a shot to the near post as the keeper dove towards the far post. Against North on March 25, Nathan notched a brace (two goals) in our four-nil win. Against West on March 29, Nathan scored another one in just over 40 minutes of play. Nathan stands at 9 goals and 2 assists, for 20 points, on the season. Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Nathan!
The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from Sprague Football: Logan Smith. Logan, a junior, is the quarterback for the 5-0 Olympians. In the 63-28 win over South Salem last Friday, Logan was 10 of 16 for 256 yards and 4 TDs. Coach Minyard adds, “Logan has been an outstanding leader through the off season and through this pandemic. He has helped organize throwing workouts and has spent numerous hours working on his skills as a quarterback. Logan is extremely coachable and is always looking for ways to improve his game. He has had a terrific junior year and we are looking forward to having back as a senior in the fall.” Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Logan!
