Here is the Press Release:

Salem Sports and Breakfast Club (since 1954)

Les Schwab (since 2013) Athletes of the Week

April 2nd, 2021

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from South Salem Girls Soccer: Mya Fry. Mya, a sophomore, plays forward for the 7-2 Saxons. In two tight games last week Mya scored the game winning goals as South beat McNary 2-1 and shut out conference leader West Salem 1 nil. Mya has 9 goals and 6 assists on the season. Coach Kroon adds, “Mya has a very high work rate and constantly wants the ball at her foot. Her pace and technical ability have been difficult for defenders to match up against all season. As demonstrated by her statistics this season, she is just as hungry to set up goals as she is to score them herself. This past week she has combined her abilities and her desire with a knack for coming up big in the moments we’ve needed her most by scoring the lone goal in a hard-fought match against West, and the go-ahead goal with 5 minutes to play in a nail biter against McNary.” Congratulations Mya from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club!

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from McNary Volleyball: Taylor Ebbs. Taylor is a senior and captain for the 9-2 Celts. Taylor leads the team in kills, digs, and serve percentage. Coach DeMello adds, “We have had an extremely successful season and Taylor’s leadership is a huge part of the team’s competitive spirit and intensity. She leads the team with 98 kills, 119 digs, and 1.9 serve receive percentage and 37 aces. That means she leads this team both in offense and defense. She encompasses all aspects of being a student-athlete and a leader on this team.” Taylor will be attending the University of Kentucky in the fall as she pursues college softball in the SEC. Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Taylor!

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from West Salem Football: Nate Garcia. Nate a senior, is a running back and safety for the 4-0 Titans. In the 28-20 win over McNary he had 35 carries for 231 yards and 2 touchdowns, he also had a reception for 8 yards. On the other side of the ball Nate had 9 tackles and forced a fumble. Coach Stanley added, “When I picture what I want a Titan football player to represent, NATE GARCIA is it. Doesn’t usually say a word, just leads by example on and off the field. You will never see him disrespect an opponent or the game. Honor student, humble and kind to everyone regardless of who they are…but when he crosses that white stripe he is as tough and as competitive as they come! Honored to be his coach!” Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Nate!

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from North Salem Football: Josiah “JoJo” Davis. Josiah, a sophomore, is a running back and defensive back for the Viks. In the 41-30 Mayor’s Cup victory over South Salem Josiah threw up some big numbers. He had 244 yards and 3 TDs on the ground while adding 60 yards and TD in the air. On special teams he had 105 return yards and another TD. For the season he has 501 yards on 61 carries (8.2 yards/carry) and 6 TDs. Congratulations from the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Josiah!
