DAYTON, Ore.—Obviously there are nervous coming out of the gate for the first game of the season. But the Dayton-Santiam Christian Girls Soccer game was one of the first games played on school grounds since March of 2020. It’s been nearly a year since the High School uniforms were broken out and games were played on school grounds.
Here they were however, kicking off the 2021 Spring season in a crazy year it was between the Pirates and the Eagles Monday afternoon at Dayton.
Dayton led 1-0 at the halftime break behind a 27th-minute goal by Keiley Myers, who almost had a second earlier in the half off a PK as well, and would add a second goal during the second half in the Pirates 3-0 victory over Santiam Christian. Building up their pressure on the Eagle defense throughout the game before just taking over during the second half.
“It felt good honestly,” Myers starts, finishing with a brace-feat in the victory. “I think we were all nervous, our nerves got to us in the beginning but towards the second half we really got it together. We worked really hard and got the win.”
Myer, who is one of the seven Seniors on the Pirates roster this season, admits there was some kind of emotion knowing that this was her last first game.
“I wasn’t nervous, I was kind of sad, I guess. It’s my last first game as a Senior. It’s sad, it’s emotional,” she said.
Paola Covarrubias scored in the 44th minute that gave Dayton a then 2-0 lead before Myers’ second goal in the 74th minute.
The squad did make the most of their first game with their aggressive play style offensively and letting goalie Konstance Albright get comfortable in goal. Pitching a shutout in her first game as a Dayton Pirate after transferring in from Blanchet Catholic this year.
“It’s amazing. We came out intense and we needed to be intense, I love to see the girls play hard,” Albright said.
Dayton will host Salem Academy Thursday night at 6pm before hosting Amity/Perrydale Saturday at 1pm to wrap up the first week of the season. The Pirates first away game will be next Monday at Yamhill-Carlton.
