Wednesday night it was brought to my attention on Twitter of what people in Iowa were doing during this Coronavirus.
Sending out a petition to the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) asking, begging, to let Spring sports spill over to Summer to allow kids to play out their full season instead of a few games.
Interesting sounding right?
Allow kids the proper enough time to knock off the rust at the end of April and start the games May without worrying about how many games you get to play. Try to get as much of your originally schedule in as possible and finish the season realistically by the end of June.
Kids jump right into travel ball, club track right afterwards and using the Fourth of July weekend as a break.
‘How do you go about this?’ was the question I asked a few weeks ago when this hit the fan. Realistically stretching this into the summer would be your best bet and you won’t have to worry about the rain delays. Also too, not everyone plays club sports and for the Seniors as well (same reasoning from Winter Sports being canceled), this is the last time they’ll get to wear their school uniforms before heading into their next adventure.
And logically this does make the most sense than going the ‘going as is’ schedule. That could result in some gruesome injuries if not taken with more precaution.
With the stretching into the summer idea…you could properly practice before entering the season. Play a single on a Tuesday and a Doubleheader Saturday starting in May and start playoffs sometime in June for baseball and softball?
Keep Track on their same schedule (maybe push it later depending on the other sports) and maybe adjust Golf and Tennis accordingly on how close you want that to baseball/softball State.
But alas, it’s just part of the waiting game in hoping the ball rolls the right way and not the other way during these crazy times and trying to keep the spirits up through it.
I can’t help to think though, call it wishful thinking for the sanity of the kids to get one more go at it, if we get do get a season going we’re going to get some of the best competition out of them on. Especially for the Seniors
