MEDFORD, Ore.– McNary didn’t start the way this wished at the Abby’s Tournament at North Medford High School Thursday.
At one point in their 75-48 win over Roseburg, advancing to Friday night’s semi-final round, the Celtics saw the Indians turn their 18-8 first quarter lead into a 24-21 lead
“We just knew that we could come out with a bigger lead. In the first half we didn’t play hard enough, we were not there so our coach was on us and we got back to ourselves,” said Nate Meithof.
Before Head Coach Ryan Kirsch talked to his team at the halftime break, a Carson Long three was followed by Meithof scoring McNary’s final five points of the half to push their lead back to ten by the break.
Their 34-24 lead seemed fitting following their slow start, having came down from Salem starting at nine am this morning for their 6pm game, before taking off in the third quarter.
Jando Gonzalez, Issac Johnson and Meithof scored before a Long 5-0 run helped spark a 21-2 run to start the second half with McNary leading 59-29 by quarters end. Their mentality changed there in the second half as they closed out Day 1 in Medford and hopefully to carry it over to Day 2 against the winner of Ashland-North Medford at 7:15.
“Just get good rest. We can come out with the same mentality and work ethic in the second half…just going out there, playing our butts off and go to work the whole time,” said Meithof.
Meithof finished with a game-high 32 points. Long and Johnson each finished with eight points. Matt Parker finished with 13 points while Jacob Parker finished with 12 points for Roseburg.
