Salem Sports and Breakfast Club – December 13, 2019

SALEM, Ore.– Here are this weeks Salem Sports And Breakfast Club Athletes of the Week for December 13.

Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Senior Athlete of the Year for girls cross country is from North Salem – Abi Swain. Abi finishes her Viking career as the most decorated cross country athlete in school history, having finished fourth this year at the OSAA state championship meet (the highest in school history), improving on her seventh place finish of last year. She earned two first-team all-state honors, an individual conference championship, and helped her team earn two OSAA trophies for consecutive fourth place finishes. Her state time is the second best time by a Salem-Keizer female athlete on the championship course and her time ranks 47th all-time for the course. Abi has continued to lower her school-record time in the 5K which now stands at 18:05. Her time is the fastest by any Salem-Keizer athlete this season and ranks her as the 4th fastest S-K girl since the change to 5K distance in 1993. She will be attending Portland State University and competing in cross country, remaining a Viking.

Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from McKay wrestling – Ashley Gonzalez. Ashley, a junior, wrestles at 100 pounds for the Scots. Ashley finished first in last week’s Perry Burlison Girls Tournament at Cascade High School. Recording two pins on her way to the championship, she helped her team to a 3rd place overall finish in a field of 26 teams. According to her coach, Ashley is a leader who has helped her new girls wrestling teammates find success on the mat.
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from Blanchet Catholic basketball – Matt Raffensperger. Matt, a senior and 2-year varsity starter, plays post for the 1-1 Cavaliers. In Tuesday’s 43-49 loss to Santiam Christian Matt had a double-double scoring 10 while grabbing 10 boards. In last week’s 68-63 win over Jefferson, he had 27 points and 14 rebounds. Matt will be attending college next year but is undecided as to where at this point.
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from McNary basketball – Nate Meithof. Nate, a junior, plays wing for the 2-0 Celts. In last Saturday’s 68-44 win over Hillsboro, Nate had 28 points and eight boards. In the 53-38 win over McMinnville this past Tuesday, he had a full stat sheet with 20 points, seven boards, sox steals, and four blocks. An AP honor roll student, coach describes Nate as a leader on the floor and in the community.
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab “Athlete” of the Week is the North Salem girls cross country team that placed 4th in the 2019 state cross country meet. This group followed up their fourth place finish at state the with a secnd place finish at the Nike NXR Regional Championships in Boise, Idaho the next weekend. North is the first girls cross-country program from Salem-Keizer to earn consecutive state trophies.

Eimy Martinez* – Junior – 15th at state in 19:08 – eighth at regionals in 19:12

Isa Swain – Sophomore – 16th at state in 19:12 – 31st at regionals in 19:44

Hailey Lewetag – Senior – 19th at state in 19:19 – 63rd at regionals in 20:06; Hailey will be attending and completing for Portland State University, remaining a Viking, with teammate Abi Swain who also will be attending and competing for PSU

Perla Quevedo* – Junior – 26th at state in 19:39 – 144th at regionals in 20:40

Elia Sanchez – Junior – 35th at state in 19:57 – 158 at regionals in 20:49

Amy Froylan – Sophomore – 61st at state in 21:18 and Did not compete at regionals

India Watson – Junior – Did not compete at state – 651st at regionals in 25:00
